Teen Hope - Step One
How To Begin Helping Your Troubled Teen
Skip this section and you may lose your teen forever…
It’s hard enough tryig to communicate when there is no battle going on. But throw emotions and attitude ito the mix and things will get heated FAST!
To increases your chances of helping your teen, you must:
- Think clearly (level headed)
- Listen openly and carefully (do not judge)
- Read body language (watch for signs)
- Empathize (put yourself in their shoes)
- Treat them as unique
- Respect their feelings and thoughts
- Guide
- Offer viable suggestions that are acceptable to both parties
- Be ready to take a timeout if “your” anger starts to increase
No matter how difficult, DO NOT:
- Try to help if you are angry
- Make demands
- Offer advice without a solution
- Try to control the situation
- Speak negatively towards your teen (”you’re no good, you’re stupid, that was dumb”)
- Compare your teen to anyone else
If you know the communication will turn into an argument, take preliminary measures. Try to diffuse the anger before it starts to build. You’ll need some tools handy and put them into action at the first site of a “trigger” occurring.
The tools you’ll need are:
- Behavior Management
- Anger Management
- Stress Management
I have some documents to help you in each of these areas. Once I get them sorted and organized, You’ll have the opportunity to learn some tips and tricks which I guarantee will help you and your teen.
